Acorns
Acorns are all edible, although they need to be prepared by leaching or boiling them to get the tannins out.
Chickweed
Chickweed is edible raw or cooked. It has a couple look-a-likes, but you can tell it by:
- a single line of hairs along the edge
- when it breaks open there is no white sap inside
- when it's pulled end-from-end, an outer wall breaks to reveal an inner strand which is a little more reluctant to break.
Cattails
Cattails have lots of uses, edible and otherwise.
The tubers can be eaten after skinning and cooking them, and the best time of year to harvest them is fall/winter.
The fluff from the top of the cattail has been used to fill pillows and blankets, or make paper.
